How to Choose a Divorce Lawyer

Divorce is something that none of us want to go through when we first get married. But it is a reality of life, with 40% to 50% of all American married couples divorcing. Divorce doesn’t have to be a bad thing, though; after divorcing, you can leave a bad or unsatisfactory situation, and move forward to your new life with your head held high. It’s really the process of divorce that can be stressful, especially if you don’t have the right divorce lawyers on your side.

Due to the increasingly common nature of divorce, there is a wide variety of divorce lawyers for you to choose from. But that doesn’t mean that every qualified divorce attorney is the right person to take on your case. With that being said, let’s look into some of the things you should do when looking for a divorce lawyer.

1. Ask for Referrals

Given how many people get divorced each year, it’s likely that you know someone who has been through divorce — perhaps even someone local to you. Once you feel comfortable, you may want to ask for a referral from other people who’ve gotten divorced. If you don’t know anyone who’s been divorced personally, consider going onto online forums for people who have gotten divorced, and ask for a local referral.

2. Consult with Lawyers You’re Considering

Most divorce lawyers offer initial consultations for free, or for a reasonable fee. Take advantage of this offer, and sit down with the lawyers that you’re considering. This is essentially the time for the lawyer to get a good idea of your case, and to decide whether or not they can help you.

3. Ask Tough Questions

During a consultation, be honest and ask questions of your potential lawyer. Be forthright about your goals. If you want to fight for full custody of your kids, for example, you need to work with a lawyer who has plenty of experience regarding custody issues. If your goal is to keep the divorce as amicable as possible, you may not want to hire the most aggressive lawyer in the field.

4. Understand Their Fee Structures

The last thing you want to do is to hire a lawyer you can’t afford. Learn about their fee structures before you commit.

Hiring a lawyer is a big step. But it can be a step in the right direction.
