family law attorney

Did you know between 40% and 50% of all marriages in the U.S. end in divorce? It’s a staggering statistic but it’s best to know ahead of time and be prepared if you or someone you love ends up having to go through the divorce process and looking for a divorce lawyer or a family attorney.

It can be an extremely stressful and emotional process to find the right family law attorney. If you’re currently looking at potential family law attorneys, there are several qualities you should be looking for.

1. Experience

How long have they been practicing law? Find out how much experience they have specifically with family law. There are many different specialties of law and family law is in itself a unique and challenging area. You need someone that understands all the legalities and ins and outs of family law.

2. Communication

You should not have to chase down your family law attorney or play phone tag. There should be clear communication and they should be available using multiple methods of communication.

If for some reason your attorney becomes unavailable, they should have other family attorneys or assistants on call to answer your questions and respond in a timely manner.

3. References

There should be no problem in a potential family law attorney providing testimonials from past clients. Don’t feel uncomfortable with asking an attorney for client references or testimonials either. They completely understand and it’s a very common request they handle daily.

4. Price/Fees

You don’t want to hire a family law attorney based on cost but it wouldn’t be truthful to say that price wasn’t a deciding factor in some people choosing one attorney over another.

You don’t want the cheapest lawyer fresh out of law school, especially when concerning family law but you also don’t want to be taken advantage of by outrageous fees and costs. So, how do you know if what you’re paying is reasonable? Ask for references and ask around in your network.

5. Integrity

Is the attorney known as someone with a great deal of integrity? When you contact the references do past clients mention the words integrity, respect, or honesty? You want an attorney that gives you the truth and doesn’t get your hopes up.

It’s critical to be able to trust your attorney and have confidence in their skillset and experience to be able to deliver the best possible results.
